Quick answer: To manage GPU power settings in Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add an app, and choose Power saving (usually the integrated GPU) or High performance (usually the dedicated GPU). Managing Power Settings for GPU in Windows: The Four Layers

GPU behaviour in Windows is decided by four layers working together:

  1. Per-app graphics preference: picks which GPU an app uses.
  2. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (HAGS): changes how work is queued to the GPU.
  3. Windows power mode or plan: mainly controls the CPU, limiting the GPU indirectly.
  4. NVIDIA Control Panel (plus the laptop maker’s utility): GPU selection and power states.

Step 1: Set the Per-App Graphics Preference

In Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Display > Graphics. In Windows 10 the equivalent is Settings > System > Display > Graphics settings. Choose whether you’re adding a desktop app (browse to its .exe file) or a Microsoft Store app, then select it and open Options. You will see three choices:

  • Let Windows decide (“System default” on Windows 10): Windows and the driver choose. Most games are detected, but emulators and niche apps sometimes land on the wrong GPU.
  • Power saving: normally the integrated GPU. Less heat, better battery life, weaker 3D performance.
  • High performance: normally the dedicated NVIDIA GPU. Full 3D performance, higher power draw.

The dialog shows which GPU each option maps to; some newer Windows 11 builds also let you pick a specific GPU.

Why it matters: this setting chooses a GPU; it doesn’t set power limits or fan curves. On a desktop with one graphics card it does almost nothing. It matters most on laptops.

Step 2: Understand Laptops With Integrated Plus Dedicated Graphics

Most gaming and creator laptops use NVIDIA Optimus. The integrated GPU drives the display, and the dedicated GPU wakes only when an app asks for it, passing its frames through the integrated GPU. That keeps idle power low at a small performance cost.

Many recent models add a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus, which can route the display straight to the NVIDIA GPU. In “dGPU only” mode the integrated GPU is bypassed, so the per-app preference no longer matters. Gaming performance improves, but battery life drops sharply. Battery vs Plugged-In Behaviour

On battery, laptops cut the dedicated GPU’s power limit sharply. A game set to High performance still runs on the NVIDIA chip, just slower, and drains the battery fast. NVIDIA’s Battery Boost caps frame rate on battery, Windows 11 can use a different power mode when unplugged, and utilities like Lenovo Vantage or Armoury Crate often switch profiles automatically. For real gaming, stay plugged in.

Step 3: Decide on Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling

HAGS lets the GPU manage its own video memory scheduling instead of leaving all of it to Windows. It needs Windows 10 version 2004 or later, a GTX 10-series or newer NVIDIA GPU, and a current driver. You’ll find it under Change default graphics settings (Windows 10) or Advanced graphics settings (Windows 11), and changing it requires a restart.

When it helps: DLSS Frame Generation requires it, so leave it on for RTX 40 and 50 series cards. Some systems see slightly smoother frame pacing.

Step 4: Match the Windows Power Mode

In Windows 11, Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode offers Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance. Windows 10 uses a battery-icon slider on laptops and classic power plans (Power saver, Balanced, High performance) in Control Panel.

Power mode mostly affects the CPU. The GPU is limited indirectly: a throttled CPU can’t feed frames fast enough, so the GPU sits partly idle. On laptops, the manufacturer’s thermal profile does change the GPU power limit, so pair Best performance with the vendor’s “Performance” or “Turbo” profile for maximum speed.

Step 5: Configure the NVIDIA Control Panel

Right-click the desktop (on Windows 11, you may need “Show more options”) and open NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D settings. Two settings matter here.

Preferred Graphics Processor

This setting only appears on systems with Optimus. The options are Auto-select, High-performance NVIDIA processor and Integrated graphics. It can be set globally or per program on the Program Settings tab.

Power Management Mode

The current options are Normal (called “Optimal power” in older drivers) and Prefer maximum performance. Some drivers also show Adaptive. Normal lets the GPU downclock under light load. Prefer maximum performance holds higher states, which can smooth older or lightly loaded games, but adds no meaningful fps to demanding ones and raises heat. Use it per program, not globally. Which Setting Wins When They Disagree?

Microsoft’s guidance is that the Windows graphics preference takes priority over the same choice in other control panels. In practice: if Windows says High performance for an app, it runs on the NVIDIA GPU even if the NVIDIA Control Panel says Integrated graphics. If Windows is left on “Let Windows decide,” the NVIDIA per-program setting generally applies. Some editors and 3D tools also have their own GPU selector. Pick one place for GPU selection (Windows is most reliable) and use the NVIDIA panel for power and 3D settings.

Troubleshooting Common GPU Power Problems

  • Game still runs on integrated graphics: add the actual game .exe, not the launcher. Confirm with Task Manager’s GPU engine column.
  • Graphics page lists no “High performance” GPU: the NVIDIA driver may be missing or broken. Do a clean NVIDIA driver install and restart.

  • Low fps on battery: expected behaviour. The GPU’s power limit is reduced on battery, and no Windows setting fully overrides it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does setting an app to High performance increase fps?

Only if the app was running on the integrated GPU before. On a laptop, moving a game from integrated to dedicated graphics can make a very large difference. If the game was already on the NVIDIA GPU, or you have a desktop with a single graphics card, the setting changes nothing.

Should I set NVIDIA Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance globally?

No. Setting it globally keeps the GPU in higher power states even for browsers and desktop apps, which adds heat, fan noise and power draw without real benefit. Apply it per program if a specific older or lightly threaded game shows frame drops caused by the GPU downclocking.

Should hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling be on or off?

For most modern NVIDIA systems, leave it on. It’s required for DLSS Frame Generation and rarely hurts performance. If you notice new stutter, capture problems or crashes in particular games, turn it off, restart and compare. The effect on average frame rate is usually small either way.

Why does my gaming laptop perform so much worse on battery?

Do these settings matter on a desktop PC?

Less so. With one graphics card and the monitor plugged into it, the per-app GPU preference has little effect.
