If you just want Nvidia cards ranked from fastest to slowest right now, the order is simple: RTX 4090 at the top, then RTX 4080 Super, RTX 4070 Ti Super, RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070, RTX 4060 Ti, RTX 4060, and RTX 3050 at the bottom. The harder question is where to stop, because pricing and VRAM make some cards a bad buy even though they are technically faster than the one below them.

How we rank them

We rank by real gaming performance at native resolution plus DLSS, not just spec sheets. We also factor VRAM capacity, power draw and connector issues, and price per frame. A card drops down our list if it needs a new power supply, does not fit in a mid-tower, or runs out of VRAM in games it should otherwise handle. That is why the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB ranks below where its raw speed suggests — 8GB is already a limit at 1440p with high textures in titles like Hogwarts Legacy, The Last of Us Part I, and Alan Wake 2.

Best Nvidia graphics cards in order compared

This table is sorted fastest first. Target resolution assumes high to ultra settings with DLSS Quality where available.

Rank Card VRAM Best for Typical board power
1 RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6X 4K ultra, 3D rendering, AI work 450W
2 RTX 4080 Super 16GB GDDR6X 4K high, 1440p 165Hz+ 320W
3 RTX 4070 Ti Super 16GB GDDR6X 1440p ultra, entry 4K 285W
4 RTX 4070 Super 12GB GDDR6X 1440p ultra, best value for high refresh 220W
5 RTX 4060 Ti 16GB 16GB GDDR6 1080p / 1440p if you need VRAM on a budget 165W
6 RTX 4060 8GB GDDR6 1080p high, small builds, upgrades from GTX cards 115W
7 RTX 3050 6GB / 8GB 6GB / 8GB GDDR6 1080p medium, old PCs with weak PSUs 70-130W

1. RTX 4090 – fastest, but only for specific buyers

The RTX 4090 is 20 to 30 percent faster than an RTX 4080 Super at 4K, and much faster in Blender, Octane, and local LLM inference because of its 24GB of VRAM and wider bus. If you do paid 3D work or want 4K 120 fps with path tracing in Cyberpunk 2077, nothing else from Nvidia comes close.

The trade-offs are serious. It is a 3.5 to 4-slot card that does not fit many cases, it wants a quality 850W to 1000W PSU, and it uses the 12VHPWR / 12V-2×6 connector. Most melted-connector failures trace back to the plug not being fully seated or being bent sharply against a side panel. Check the plug with the power off, leave 35mm of straight cable before any bend, and avoid third-party adapters unless they are rated for 600W. This card suits 4K OLED owners and creators who bill for render time. For everyone else, it is wasted money — you will be CPU-limited at 1440p and below.

2-3. RTX 4080 Super and RTX 4070 Ti Super – the rational 4K cards

The RTX 4080 Super is the sensible 4K gaming flagship. You get 16GB VRAM, about 75 to 80 percent of a 4090 for gaming, and far lower power draw at 320W. It still needs a large case and a 750W PSU, but it runs cooler and quieter than the 4090 and avoids most of the extreme price premium. Buy it if you play at 4K 120Hz or 1440p 240Hz and keep cards for 4 to 5 years.

The RTX 4070 Ti Super is only about 8 to 12 percent slower than the 4080 Super but is often much cheaper. The key upgrade over the original 4070 Ti is the jump from 12GB to 16GB on a 256-bit bus, which fixes stuttering in VRAM-heavy games at 1440p ultra and makes it viable for light 4K. Failure mode to know: partner cards vary widely in cooler size and fan stop behavior. Cheap two-fan models can hit 75C+ and get loud in small cases, while three-fan models are fine. This is the pick for 1440p ultrawide players who want to max settings without paying the 4080 tax.

4. RTX 4070 Super – the sweet spot for most people

For a 1440p 144Hz monitor, the RTX 4070 Super is where we tell most buyers to stop. It beats the RTX 3090 in many raster games while using only 220W, which means it works with a good 650W PSU and fits in far more cases. DLSS 3 Frame Generation pushes it to high-refresh territory in Starfield, Alan Wake 2, and Microsoft Flight Simulator where raw raster would fall short.

Its limit is 12GB VRAM. That is fine today at 1440p, but you will need to drop texture pools from Ultra to High in a few ports over the next two years. Do not buy it for heavy Blender work with large scenes — you will hit out-of-memory errors where the 16GB cards survive. It suits upgraders from RTX 2060, RTX 3060, or GTX 1080 who want a large jump without rewiring their PC. The non-Super RTX 4070 is only worth it if you find it at least $80 cheaper; otherwise the Super’s extra cores are worth the difference.

5-6. RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4060 – 1080p cards with caveats

The RTX 4060 Ti exists in 8GB and 16GB versions with identical GPUs. Get the 16GB version only if you play modded games like Skyrim with 4K texture packs, Cities: Skylines II, or do Stable Diffusion at 768p and above. For pure 1080p gaming, the 8GB model is usually 3 to 5 percent faster per dollar, but both are held back by a narrow 128-bit bus, which hurts 1% lows at 1440p compared to the 4070 Super.

The standard RTX 4060 is honest about what it is: a cool, efficient 1080p card that draws 115W and runs off a single 8-pin. It is about 20 percent faster than an RTX 3060 with DLSS 3, and it is a huge upgrade from a GTX 1660 Super. It struggles with 8GB in the same way — expect to use DLSS Balanced and High instead of Ultra textures in new AAA ports. It suits esports players at 1080p 165Hz, small form-factor builds, and prebuilt PCs with a 450W to 550W PSU that cannot handle anything larger. Do not buy it for 1440p ultra; spend up to a 4070 Super instead.

What to skip or buy used only

The RTX 3050 only makes sense for very old office PCs that need a bus-powered upgrade or for 1080p medium gaming when found under $160. New, it is often beaten by used RTX 2060 Super or RTX 3060 12GB cards that have more VRAM. Similarly, avoid the RTX 4060 Ti 8GB at close to 4070 prices, and avoid any RTX 4080 non-Super still priced above the 4080 Super. If you buy used, test for fan bearing noise, repaste if hotspot temps exceed 95C, and confirm the 12VHPWR cable is included and undamaged on 4070-series and above.

FAQ

Is 12GB VRAM enough for 1440p?

Yes for now if you are willing to use High instead of Ultra textures in a few games and use DLSS. If you keep GPUs for 4+ years or play modded and simulation games, 16GB is safer.

What power supply do I need for an RTX 4070 Super vs 4090?

A quality 650W PSU is enough for a 4070 Super with a modern CPU. For a 4080 Super use 750W, and for a 4090 use 850W minimum, 1000W if you have a high-end Intel i9 or Ryzen 9. Age and 12V rail quality matter more than wattage alone.

Should I buy RTX 4060 or spend more for RTX 4070 Super?

Stay with the RTX 4060 if you play at 1080p and mostly play competitive games. Move to the 4070 Super if you have a 1440p 144Hz or higher monitor or want ray tracing without compromises. The price gap is large, but so is the performance gap — about 60 percent.

Does DLSS make a slower RTX card better than a faster one without it?

Only within Nvidia’s lineup. DLSS Quality plus Frame Generation lets a 4070 Super feel like a much faster card at 1440p and 4K. It does not fix VRAM shortages or make a 4060 match a 4080 Super at native resolution.
